Arp Catalog

Halton C. Arp (March 21, 1927 - December 28, 2013) was an astronomer who argued against the new expanding universe theory when it was first introduced, using images of galaxies that appeared to be interacting, yet according to distance measurements were assumed by the theory to be great distances apart from one another. Eventually Arp compiled a catalog of 338 of these interacting and odd-shaped galaxies grouped into thirty-seven different catagories. While the expanding universe model has now been accepted by most astronomers, Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies remains the best catalog of these interesting galaxies. Of the 338 objects in the Arp Catalog, here are the ones I have imaged so far. Click any thumbnail to see the full-size image and a description of the object. Place the mouse cursor over any words highlighted in green for more information. For mobile device users, all the highlighted terms are listed under the Glossary tab.
